DAILY BIBLE READING May 31st, 2020 ACTS 2:1-21 (GNT)

God’s Life-Giving Word of Faith INTRODUCTION Acts 2:1-21: Today marks the day when many Christians celebrate Pentecost. God sends the Holy Spirit to give power and courage to the apostles. They begin to tell the good news about Jesus, which people hear in many different languages. Some people are happy and excited, while others make fun of the Lord’s followers. Peter quotes the words of the prophet Joel regarding the outpouring of the Holy Spirit. TODAY'S SCRIPTURE: ACTS 2:4 They were all filled with the Holy Spirit and began to talk in other languages, as the Spirit enabled them to speak. TODAY'S READING The Coming of the Holy Spirit 1  When the day of Pentecost came, all the believers were gathered together in one place.  2 Suddenly there was a noise from the sky which sounded like a strong wind blowing, and it filled the whole house where they were sitting.  3 Then they saw what looked like tongues of fire which spread out and touched each person there.  4 They were all fill

DAILY BIBLE READING 2 CORINTHIANS 12:1-10 (GNT)

May 30th, 2020 God’s Life-Giving Word of Faith INTRODUCTION 2 Corinthians 12:1-10: Paul begins to tell about his vision as if it happened to someone else, but he is really talking about himself. He reveals that he was given a painful physical ailment, and he concludes by saying that when he is weak, he is strong because he knows that God’s kindness and power are all he needs; he does not need to rely on his own strength. TODAY'S SCRIPTURE: 2 CORINTHIANS 12:9B [Paul writes:] I am most happy, then, to be proud of my weaknesses, in order to feel the protection of Christ’s power over me. TODAY'S READING Paul's Visions and Revelations 1 I have to boast, even though it doesn't do any good. But I will now talk about visions and revelations given me by the Lord.  2 I know a certain Christian man who fourteen years ago was snatched up to the highest heaven (I do not know whether this actually happened or whether he had a vision—only God knows).  3-4 I repeat, I know that this ma

DAILY BIBLE READING May 29th, 2020 2 CORINTHIANS 10:1-18 (GNT)

God’s Life-Giving Word of Faith INTRODUCTION 2 Corinthians 10:1-18: Paul defends himself and his work against ongoing attacks made by his critics in the church in Corinth. Some claim that his letters are harsh but that in person he is weak. His hope is that the faith of people will grow, and he concludes by admonishing the Corinthians to boast only about what the Lord has done. TODAY'S SCRIPTURE: 2 CORINTHIANS 10:18 For it is when the Lord thinks well of us that we are really approved, and not when we think well of ourselves. TODAY'S READING Paul Defends His Ministry 1 I, Paul, make a personal appeal to you—I who am said to be meek and mild when I am with you, but harsh with you when I am away. By the gentleness and kindness of Christ  2 I beg you not to force me to be harsh when I come; for I am sure I can deal harshly with those who say that we act from worldly motives.  3 It is true that we live in the world, but we do not fight from worldly motives.  4 The weapons we use in

DAILY BIBLE READING 2 CORINTHIANS 9:1-15 (GNT)

May 28th, 2020 God’s Life-Giving Word of Faith INTRODUCTION 2 Corinthians 9:1-15: Today’s reading continues Paul’s encouragement to the Corinthians to give generously to the collection for the followers of Jesus in Jerusalem. He says that God will increase what the people have so that they can give even more. He says that their gifts will not only help others in their need, but that it will also help others praise God. TODAY'S SCRIPTURE: 2 CORINTHIANS 9:8 God is able to give you more than you need, so that you will always have all you need for yourselves and more than enough for every good cause. TODAY'S READING Help for Needy Believers 1 There is really no need for me to write you about the help being sent to God's people in Judea.  2 I know that you are willing to help, and I have boasted of you to the people in Macedonia. “The believers in Achaia,” I said, “have been ready to help since last year.” Your eagerness has stirred up most of them.  3 Now I am sending these bel

DAILY BIBLE READING May 27th, 2020 2 CORINTHIANS 8:16-24 (GNT)

God’s Life-Giving Word of Faith INTRODUCTION 2 Corinthians 8:16-24: In today’s reading, Paul explains that Titus is in charge of the collection, and that he and another follower of Jesus will come to encourage the Corinthians to give generously. TODAY'S SCRIPTURE: 2 CORINTHIANS 8:21 Our purpose is to do what is right, not only in the sight of the Lord, but also in the sight of others. TODAY'S READING Titus and His Companions 16 How we thank God for making Titus as eager as we are to help you!  17 Not only did he welcome our request; he was so eager to help that of his own free will he decided to go to you.  18 With him we are sending the brother who is highly respected in all the churches for his work in preaching the gospel.  19 And besides that, he has been chosen and appointed by the churches to travel with us as we carry out this service of love for the sake of the Lord's glory and in order to show that we want to help. 20 We are being careful not to stir up any complai

DAILY BIBLE READING May 26th, 2020 2 CORINTHIANS 8:1-15 (GNT)

God’s Life-Giving Word of Faith INTRODUCTION 2 Corinthians 8:1-15: Paul asks the Corinthian churches to collect money offerings as part of a larger offering to be given by the churches in Macedonia to the followers in Jerusalem. TODAY'S SCRIPTURE: 2 CORINTHIANS 8:12 If you are eager to give, God will accept your gift on the basis of what you have to give, not on what you don’t have. TODAY'S READING Christian Giving 1  Our friends, we want you to know what God's grace has accomplished in the churches in Macedonia.  2 They have been severely tested by the troubles they went through; but their joy was so great that they were extremely generous in their giving, even though they are very poor.  3 I can assure you that they gave as much as they could, and even more than they could. Of their own free will  4 they begged us and pleaded for the privilege of having a part in helping God's people in Judea.  5 It was more than we could have hoped for! First they gave themselves to

DAILY BIBLE READING May 25th, 2020 2 CORINTHIANS 7:2-16 (GNT)

God’s Life-Giving Word of Faith INTRODUCTION 2 Corinthians 7:2-16: Paul is happy to hear that the Corinthians were concerned about him and were sorry for the way they had been acting. He refers to a letter in which he apparently had criticized the actions and behavior of some of the Corinthian Christians. TODAY'S SCRIPTURE: 2 CORINTHIANS 7:10A For the sadness that is used by God brings a change of heart that leads to salvation. TODAY'S READING Paul's Joy 2 Make room for us in your hearts. We have wronged no one; we have ruined no one, nor tried to take advantage of anyone.  3 I do not say this to condemn you; for, as I have said before, you are so dear to us that we are always together, whether we live or die.  4 I am so sure of you; I take such pride in you! In all our troubles I am still full of courage; I am running over with joy. 5  Even after we arrived in Macedonia, we did not have any rest. There were troubles everywhere, quarrels with others, fears in our hearts.  6

7 Hindrances To Prayer

Image
We have gone very carefully into the positive conditions of prevailing prayer; but there are some things which hinder prayer. These God has made very plain in His Word. 1. The first hindrance to prayer we will find in James 4:3, "Ye ask and receive not BECAUSE YE ASK AMISS, THAT YE MAY SPEND IT IN YOUR PLEASURES." A selfish purpose in prayer robs prayer of power. Very many prayers are selfish. These may be prayers for things for which it is perfectly proper to ask, for things which it is the will of God to give, but the motive of the prayer is entirely wrong, and so the prayer falls powerless to the ground. The true purpose in prayer is that God may be glorified in the answer. If we ask any petition merely that we may receive something to use in our pleasures or in our own gratification in one way or another, we "ask amiss ' and need not expect to receive what we ask. This explains why many prayers remain unanswered. For example, many a woman is praying for the conve

Daily Bible Reading 2 CORINTHIANS 6:1—7:1 (GNT)

May 24th, 2020 God’s Life-Giving Word of Faith INTRODUCTION 2 Corinthians 6:1—7:1: Paul reminds the Corinthians that he and his co-workers have gone out of their way to work hard and not cause problems and that they have spoken the truth. He concludes by warning the Corinthians against pagan influences and encourages them to live in awe of God. TODAY'S SCRIPTURE: 2 CORINTHIANS 7:1B Let us purify ourselves from everything that makes body or soul unclean, and let us be completely holy by living in awe of God. TODAY'S READING 1 In our work together with God, then, we beg you who have received God's grace not to let it be wasted.  2  Hear what God says: “When the time came for me to show you favor, I heard you; when the day arrived for me to save you, I helped you.” Listen! This is the hour to receive God's favor; today is the day to be saved! 3 We do not want anyone to find fault with our work, so we try not to put obstacles in anyone's way.  4 Instead, in everything w
