Daily Bible Reading April 30th, 2020 Romans 15:1-13 (GNT)

God’s Life-Giving Word of Hope Introduction Romans 15:1-13: Chapter 15 ushers in the conclusion of Paul’s letter to the Romans. He encourages Christ followers not to please themselves but to act in ways that edify the community of believers. He explains that the Good News is for Jews and Gentiles. Today's Scripture: Romans 15:13 May God, the source of hope, fill you with all joy and peace by means of your faith in him, so that your hope will continue to grow by the power of the Holy Spirit. Today's Reading Please Others, Not Yourselves 1 We who are strong in the faith ought to help the weak to carry their burdens. We should not please ourselves. 2 Instead, we should all please other believers for their own good, in order to build them up in the faith. 3 F

Daily Bible Reading April 29th, 2020 Romans 6:1-23 (GNT)

God’s Life-Giving Word of Hope Introduction Romans 6:1-23: Paul explains being baptized as dying to sin and being raised to life, just as Jesus died and was raised to life by God. Today's Scripture: Romans 6:8 Since we have died with Christ, we believe that we will also live with him. Today's Reading Dead to Sin but Alive in Union with Christ 1 What shall we say, then? Should we continue to live in sin so that God's grace will increase? 2 Certainly not! We have died to sin—how then can we go on living in it? 3 For surely you know that when we were baptized into union with Christ Jesus, we were baptized into union with his death. 4 By our baptism, then, we were buried with him and shared his death, in order that, just as Christ was raised from death by t

DAILY BIBLE READING April 28th, 2020 ROMANS 5:1-21 (GNT)

God’s Life-Giving Word of Hope INTRODUCTION Romans 5:1-21: Being put right with God opens the way for living the new life of faith. The apostle Paul teaches that God’s love for us is poured into our hearts by means of God’s gift, the Holy Spirit, and that God’s grace comes to us through Jesus Christ. TODAY'S SCRIPTURE: ROMANS 5:8 But God has shown us how much he loves us – it was while we were still sinners that Christ died for us! TODAY'S READING Right with God 1Now that we have been put right with God through faith, we have peace with God through our Lord Jesus Christ. 2He has brought us by faith into this experience of God's grace, in which we now live. And so we boast of the hope we have of sharing God's glory! 3We also boast of our troubles, because we know that trouble produces endurance, 4endurance brings God's approval, and his approval creates hope. 5This hope does not disappoint us, for God has poured out his love into our hearts by means of the Holy Spiri

THE 7 HINDRANCES TO PRAYER

Image
We have gone very carefully into the positive conditions of prevailing prayer; but there are some things which hinder prayer. These God has made very plain in His Word. 1. The first hindrance to prayer we will find in James 4:3, "Ye ask and receive not BECAUSE YE ASK AMISS, THAT YE MAY SPEND IT IN YOUR PLEASURES." A selfish purpose in prayer robs prayer of power. Very many prayers are selfish. These may be prayers for things for which it is perfectly proper to ask, for things which it is the will of God to give, but the motive of the prayer is entirely wrong, and so the prayer falls powerless to the ground. The true purpose in prayer is that God may be glorified in the answer. If we ask any petition merely that we may receive something to use in our pleasures or in our own gratification in one way or another, we "ask amiss ' and need not expect to receive what we ask. This explains why many prayers remain unanswered. For example, many a woman is praying for the conve

Daily Bible Reading April 27th, 2020 Romans 4:1-25 (GNT)

God’s Life-Giving Word of Hope Introduction Romans 4:1-25: Using the example of Abraham, Paul describes how we are accepted as righteous by God. According to Paul, God’s promises are for all who have faith and God’s promise to Abraham was independent of the Law. Today's Scripture: Romans 4:5 Those who depend on faith, not on deeds, and who believe in the God who declares the guilty to be innocent, it is this faith that God takes into account in order to put them right with himself. Today's Reading The Example of Abraham 1 What shall we say, then, of Abraham, the father of our race? What was his experience? 2 If he was put right with God by the things he did, he would have something to boast about—but not in God's sight. 3 The scripture says, “Abraham

Daily Bible Reading April 26th, 2020 Romans 3:19-31 (GNT)

God’s Life-Giving Word of Hope Introduction Romans 3:19-31: Paul declares that no one is put right with God by following the Law but that, through God’s grace, all are put right with God through Christ Jesus. Today's Scripture: Romans 3:24 By the free gift of God’s grace all are put right with him through Christ Jesus, who sets them free. Today's Reading 19 Now we know that everything in the Law applies to those who live under the Law, in order to stop all human excuses and bring the whole world under God's judgment. 20 For no one is put right in God's sight by doing what the Law requires; what the Law does is to make us know that we have sinned. How We Are Put Right with God 21 But now God's way of putting people right with himself has be

Daily Bible Reading April 25th, 2020 Hebrews 6:13-20 (GNT)

God’s Life-Giving Word of Hope Introduction Hebrews 6:13-20: Today’s reading is a continuation of yesterday’s reading (Hebrews 5:11—6:12), and we learn of God’s promise to Abraham as recorded in Genesis 22:16, 17. God’s promise is supplemented by a vow which underscores God’s faithfulness and reliability and indicates that God’s purposes never change. Today's Scripture: Hebrews 6:19a We have this hope as an anchor for our lives. It is safe and sure. Today's Reading God's Sure Promise 13 When God made his promise to Abraham, he made a vow to do what he had promised. Since there was no one greater than himself, he used his own name when he made his vow. 14 He said, “I promise you that I will bless you and give you many descendants.” 15 Abraham was pati

God’s Life-Giving Word of Hope Introduction Hebrews 5:11—6:12: Christ’s followers are warned not to turn their backs on God’s message but to be mature in their faith. Those who turn away from the message Jesus brought are like those who “are again crucifying the Son of God” (verse 6). Today's Scripture: Hebrews 6:10 God is not unfair. He will not forget the work you did or the love you showed for him in the help you gave and are still giving to other Christians. Today's Reading Warning against Abandoning the Faith 11 There is much we have to say about this matter, but it is hard to explain to you, because you are so slow to understand. 12 There has been e

God’s Life-Giving Word of Hope Introduction Hebrews 4:14—5:10: Today’s reading cites two priests mentioned in the Old Testament—Melchizedek (Genesis 14:17-20) and Aaron (Exodus 28 and 29). God made Jesus the High Priest who “became the source of eternal salvation for all those who obey him” (5:9). Believers are encouraged to approach God’s throne of grace and mercy with confidence. Today's Scripture: Hebrews 4:14b For we have a great High Priest who has gone into the very presence of God—Jesus, the Son of God. Today's Reading Jesus the Great High Priest 14 Let us, then, hold firmly to the faith we profess. For we have a great High Priest who has gone into

Daily Bible Reading April 22nd, 2020 Hebrews 4:1-13 (GNT)

God’s Life-Giving Word of Hope Introduction Hebrews 4:1-13: The author continues describing God’s promised rest and recounts that those “who first heard the Good News did not receive that rest, because they did not believe” (verse 6). Verses 1-3 affirm that those who accept the Good News will be recipients of God’s promised rest. Verse 3 concludes with the author quoting from Psalm 95:11 which is also quoted again in verse 5. Today's Scripture: Hebrews 4:13a There is nothing that can be hid from God; everything in all creation is exposed and lies open before his eyes. Today's Reading 1 Now, God has offered us the promise that we may receive that rest he sp

Daily Bible Reading April 21st, 2020 Hebrews 3:1-19 (GNT)

God’s Life-Giving Word of Hope Introduction Hebrews 3:1-19: The author explains that Jesus is greater than Moses. While Moses was a faithful servant and spoke to God’s people, Christ, God’s own Son, is in charge of God’s people. The chapter concludes with a warning about rebelling against God and a reminder to remain faithful in order to enter the place of rest. Today's Scripture: Hebrews 3:6 Christ is faithful as the Son in charge of God’s house. We are his house if we keep up our courage and our confidence in what we hope for. Today's Reading Jesus Is Greater than Moses 1 My Christian friends, who also have been called by God! Think of Jesus, whom God

Daily Bible Reading April 20th, 2020 Hebrews 2:1-18 (GNT)

God’s Life-Giving Word of Hope Introduction Hebrews 2:1-18: Jesus came to serve God as a faithful high priest and to sacrifice himself to forgive sins. Because he suffered and was tempted, he can now help us when we are tempted. Today's Scripture: Hebrews 2:10a It was only right that God, who creates and preserves all things, should make Jesus perfect through suffering, in order to bring many children to share his glory. Today's Reading The Great Salvation 1 That is why we must hold on all the more firmly to the truths we have heard, so that we will not be carried away. 2 The message given to our ancestors by the angels was shown to be true, and those who

God’s Life-Giving Word of Hope Introduction Hebrews 1:1-14: The Letter to the Hebrews is a teaching sermon that is designed to help explain what the new Christian faith is all about. Today’s passage explains that the ancient prophets spoke God’s message to his people, but now God has sent Jesus to tell God’s message, achieve forgiveness for humanity’s sins, and rule over all creation forever. Today's Scripture: Hebrews 1:3a He reflects the brightness of God’s glory and is the exact likeness of God’s own being. Today's Reading God's Word through His Son 1 In the past God spoke to our ancestors many times and in many ways through the prophets, 2 but in

God’s Life-Giving Word of Hope Introduction John 21:15-25: After sharing a breakfast of bread and fish with seven of the disciples, Jesus calls upon Peter to follow him and to care for Jesus’s lambs and sheep. John’s Gospel concludes by saying that there were many other things that Jesus did, and that not enough books could be written to contain them all. Today's Scripture: John 21:25 Now, there are many other things that Jesus did. If they were all written down one by one, I suppose that the whole world could not hold the books that would be written. Today's Reading Jesus and Peter 15 After they had eaten, Jesus said to Simon Peter, “Simon son of John, do

Today's Scripture: John 21:10 Jesus said to them, “Bring some of the fish you have caught.” Today's Reading Jesus Appears to Seven Disciples 1 After this, Jesus appeared once more to his disciples at Lake Tiberias. God’s Life-Giving Word of Hope Introduction John 20:19-31: Late Sunday evening Jesus appears to the disciples who are locked behind closed doors. Jesus breathes on them, and they receive the Holy Spirit. He appears to them again and Thomas’s faith is tested. Today's Scripture: John 20:29b [Jesus said:] “How happy are those who believe without seeing me!” Today's Reading Jesus Appears to His Disciples ( Matthew 28.16-20 ; Mark 16.14-18 ; Luke 24.36-49 ) 19 It was late that Sunday evening, and the disciples were gathered together behind locked doors, because they were afraid of the Jewish authorities. Then Jesus came and stood among them. “Peace be with you,

Daily Bible Reading: 1 Corinthians 15:12-34 (GNT)

God’s Life-Giving Word of Hope Introduction 1 Corinthians 15:12-34: In today’s reading, Paul gives his most detailed teaching about the Christian hope for life after death. He says that God’s people will be raised to new life, just as God raised Jesus from death. Today's Scripture: 1 Corinthians 15:22 For just as all people die because of their union with Adam, in the same way all will be raised to life because of their union with Christ. Today's Reading Our Resurrection 12 Now, since our message is that Christ has been raised from death, how can some of you say that the dead will not be raised to life? 13 If that is true, it means that Christ was not rai

Daily Bible Reading: 1 Corinthians 15:35-58 (GNT)

God’s Life-Giving Word of Hope Introduction 1 Corinthians 15:35-58: The Corinthians had sent a letter to Paul asking him a number of questions. In this passage, Paul responds to the questions, “How can the dead be raised to life? What kind of body will they have?” (15:35). Paul says that our earthly bodies will be changed into eternal or spiritual bodies. Today's Scripture: 1 Corinthians 15:52b For when the trumpet sounds, the dead will be raised, never to die again, and we shall all be changed. Today's Reading The Resurrection Body 35 Someone will ask, “How can the dead be raised to life? What kind of body will they have?” 36 You fool! When you plant a seed
